St Paul's Church, Birkenshaw
This is a Commissioner's church, built on land donated by Messrs. E & J Emmet. This was part of the setting up of new parishes within the vast parish of Birstall. These included Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike and Liversedge (Christ Church). The church was consecrated on 27 Sep 1831, and the parish, The Chapelry District of Birkenshaw-cum-Hunsworth, was created in1842. The design was a simple aisle-less church in the lancet style with a gallery at the west end. This was removed and the church extended eastwards by two bays when the church was restored in 1892-3. Vestries were also added at the west end. The spire collapsed and had to be rebuilt in 1838 and in 1954 (the latter collapse was due to being struck by lightning). The village war memorial, designed by John Lawrence, consisting of an oaken screen bearing shields and the names of the fallen, was placed in the church in 1921. This view shows how the schoolrooms flank the entrance to the churchyard.
