NT2170 : Redhall Walled Garden
taken 7 years ago, near to Craiglockhart, Edinburgh, Scotland
A walled garden laid out by Robert Bowie in the 1750s for George Inglis of Auchendinny, who was building Redhall House on the opposite side of the river Link Link. There is a summerhouse with a Venetian/Palladian pedimented front with urns, which appear not now to be present. The garden is approx. 0.9ha [2.25 acres] and surrounded by a brick lined wall.
The garden is now a community garden and is used by the Scottish Association for Mental Health to give training in horticulture, conservation, maintenance skills, ITC/admin and life skills to people with mental health problems. It supports 50-55 service users -who prefer to be called trainees - from within Edinburgh City at any given time, with a Team Leader, 3 Horticultural instructors, an IT Instructor and an Employment Support Worker. Link. The garden is open to the public, with plants for sale.
