M3 through Winchester
M3 through Winchester
Many people use this route but very few see this view. Taken from the footbridge across the motorway used by the South Downs Way. Looking north into the next square towards the gap through Magdalen Down to the east of Winchester. This is the replacement Spitfire Bridge and the M3/A34 junction, Spitfire roundabout, is just over the brow of the hill.

The original bridge was called Spitfire Bridge after a bit of bravado by a Canadian pilot in WWII. The bridge is the site of George Rogersí exploit when, on 19 October 1941, he flew under the arch of the previous bridge that spanned the Winchester bypass (opened in 1940). Rogers was flying from Eastleigh to Odiham and, when he passed under the bridge, nearly collided with an oncoming HGV. In avoiding it he clipped the bridge tearing 3 feet from one wing tip, but he made it to Odiham where he crashed on landing. He was uninjured. Rogers was piloting a P40 Tomahawk, but the story got around locally without this information and it was assumed that the aircraft must have been a Spitfire. The bridge became known as Spitfire Bridge and though the bridge has gone the name lives on.
