This is a very boggy upland area. Much of it used to be covered in forest, although there are some gaps around the source grounds of the Diffeithnant Fawr stream in the southern half and near the top of y Banc Mawr because of the need to reduce wind turbulence around the wind turbines. The forest in the eastern half of the square has now been felled, but this is probably normal forestry operation rather than clear felling for the sake of the power station.
