Monument to Symington's Pumping Engine
The plaque reads 'Site of William Symington's Improved Atmospheric Pumping Engine, 1789.'
William Symington (1764–1831) was an engineer and inventor born in nearby Leadhills. He devised a steam engine improving upon James Watt's design, one example of which was installed here at the Bay Mine (named after the Botany Bay colony in Australia), where it was used to pump water from an adit associated with lead mining.
