Named after a professor of history who was instrumental in setting up the new wave of universities and polytechnics from the 1960s. Briggs was actually vice-chancellor across the road at Sussex from 1967-76. The footpath in TQ3408 : Footpath to the University of Brighton leads off to the right whilst the embankment at the far end of TQ3408 : Playing Fields, University of Brighton is where the tree is.
