Brown-tail moth larvae
Caterpillars of the brown-tail moth (Euproctis chrysorrhoea) live communally in a web on a variety of bushes and trees (on bramble here). The caterpillars' hairs are very irritant and can cause rashes, headaches and breathing difficulties. They are mostly found near the coast of south and east England and occasionally reach nuisance proportions. This web was on the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve by the path to the mouth of the river Rother.
