Delapré Abbey, Northampton
Delapré Abbey, Northampton
Part of the 8 acres (32,000 m2) of formal gardens of Delapré Abbey, or more correctly known as The Abbey of St Mary de la Pré (i.e. the Abbey of St Mary in the Meadow). This country house and former monastery is situated in the meadows of the River Nene to the south of Northampton close to the A506. Various generations of the Bouverie family owned the house and grounds between 1764-1905 and this part of the gardens is known as the Bouverie Memorial Garden. The ornamental gardens are permanently open to the public. An inscription on the stone reads: “I love my country but my freedom is more precious.”
