Old Shoreham Road, Hove
The current A270 as it travels between the two sections of Hove Cemetery. The road is quite ancient and follows in places a local Roman road westwards towards a crossing of the River Adur where the settlement of Old Shoreham later grew up. The road was still rural when the southern part of the cemetery was consecrated and retains an air of the countryside here despite becoming a fully urban road by the 1930s. By that point it was the A27 which was made a dual carriageway in the 1970s and finally replaced with a bypass that opened in stages between 1991 and 1995.
