SS3523 : The Gore and The Old Quay

taken 7 years ago, near to Buck's Mills, Devon, England

The Gore and The Old Quay
The Gore and The Old Quay
Two lines of rocks protrude into the sea just NW of Buck's Mills. The further, and longer, line is natural, and is known as The Gore. Slightly nearer than that are the remains of the man-made 'Old Quay', built at the very end of the 16th century by one Richard Cole (allegedly the 'Old King Cole' of nursery rhyme fame.) It would originally have been a rather more distinct quay or harbour, and attached to the cliff by a causeway and track, but the cliffline has retreated over the years, and the quay has collapsed leaving just a sea-washed pile of very large boulders.
