Three of the Nine Stones
Three of the Nine Stones
These three weathered granite standing stones are in the south-west quadrant of the "Nine Stones" stone circle. The circle is believed to be prehistoric, and was restored by the land-owner (and antiquary) F R Rodd in 1889. The open moorland is grazed by sheep, cattle and ponies and they use the stones as scratching-posts, wearing away the soil around the base of each stone. There are only eight stones in the circle (plus a more modern parish boundary marker stone at the circle's centre) so presumably there was once an (extra) ancient stone filling the gap on the northern side.
