Combe Haven, Bulverhythe
Combe Haven, Bulverhythe
This man made channel is a reminder of a harbour that once existed between Glynne Gap and West Marina. The headland further west at modern day Bexhill originally jutted out further south than today which protected the inlet at Bulverhythe. However, constant erosion of the sandstone cliffs caused the silting up of the harbour so by the 16th century little remained of it. Combe Haven itself entered the sea further to the east but was diverted when the new resort of St Leonards was built in the 19th century. The sluice gates are under the bridge that carries the Brighton-Hastings railway line.
