Giant Yew Topiary at Powis Castle
Giant Yew Topiary at Powis Castle
Giant yew topiary at Powis Castle was first planted in the 1680s when the fashion was to garden in strict geometric patterns or formal gardening. The yews growing directly below the castle on the top terrace began as trimmed cones or obelisk shapes. In the 1780s a more natural form of landscape gardening was developed leaving the topiary trees to grow into their natural unclipped shapes. In Victorian times a stricter control returned with the yews shaped into the forms we see today.
