Among more boggy moorland, there are a few knolls of higher land where the grass is greener and rock outcrops. The geological map shows that the rock underlying here is the Whin Sill NY8370 : Outcrop of Whin Sill near Shield on the Wall. The knolls are tear-drop shaped west to east and may have been sculpted by glacial ice. An old track from the road by Shield on the Wall crosses the knoll in the foreground where the rock shows signs of having been quarried although this is not indicated on the large scale maps.

In 1930 it was proposed that road stone should be extracted on a large scale at Shield on the Wall and further west by a company called 'Roman Stones Ltd.

"These works, if permitted, would have created a very serious impact on the physical fabric and setting of the best-preserved and most atmospheric part of Hadrian's Wall, and the growing public appreciation of the importance of the remains gave rise to a strong resistance to the scheme."
