Cartmel Priory
Cartmel Priory
Cartmel Priory was founded in 1190 by William Marshal for the Augustinian Canons and dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Michael. It was first colonised by a prior and twelve monks from Bradenstoke Priory in Wiltshire. The only other surviving monastic building is the gatehouse which faces the village square. The priory was dissolved in 1536, and, normal circumstances, the church would have been demolished along with the rest of the buildings associated with the priory; however the villagers petitioned to be allowed to keep the church as it was their only place of worship, and this was granted.

Cartmel Priory church serves as the Anglican parish church of Cartmel, in the deanery of Windermere, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle Cumbria.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building (Historic England List Entry Number: 1335798 LinkExternal link Heritage Gateway).
Cartmel :: SD3878

Cartmel is a village in Cumbria, approximately 2 miles to the north-west of Grange-over-Sands and close to the River Eea in a quiet valley in one of England’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel has grown up around its famous 12th Century mediæval Priory Church and was once known as Kirkby in Cartmel. Historically in Lancashire, boundary changes brought it into the newly created county of Cumbria in 1974.
