It is possible to walk through Netherton Tunnel; there are towpaths with railings either side. It is 1.72 miles long and the walk through should take around 40-45 minutes and a good torch is essential. The towpath on the northwestern side through the tunnel is gated both ends but on the occasion of my visit both were unlocked. Good walking boots are a must as there are long elongated puddles on the path which may be up to 2 inches deep in parts. The tunnel was the last major canal tunnel to be built in Britain and opened in 1858. The tunnel is straight and it is just possible to see the far end.
