SU4726 : Hockley Viaduct

taken 5 months ago, near to Compton End, Hampshire, Great Britain

Hockley Viaduct
Hockley Viaduct
A viaduct on the abandoned Didcot, Newbury and Southampton line, which never got further south than Winchester. This was on a link built somewhat later in conjunction with the LSWR to enable through traffic via the LSWR southwards to Southampton. It is now open to the public. National Cycle Route 23 uses it. There are reportedly 33 spans, although I could not get in a suitable position to check on this. The span over the main River Itchen is much greater than the rest.
