Meggie's House
Meggie's House
Old maps identify this as Meggie's (or Meggy's) House, now a ruined cottage used as a byre, alongside a roofless nissen hut, on the west side of the narrow lane north of Newbrough, between Lane House and Torney's Fell. These properties are high up on the east side of Meggie's Dene Burn. There is a local legend in the area of Old Meg (the Newbrough Witch) who was burned at the stake, and buried in the Dene with a stake through her heart. If this event took place in the 17th century it is unlikely that the current property is of that age. In springtime a pink-flowered thorn tree close to the stream is said to mark the location of her grave. Her story features in Kirsty Ferry's book, The Memory of Snow (2012).
