Rudder and propeller of the SS Great Britain
Rudder and propeller of the SS Great Britain
The rudder and propeller of the preserved SS Great Britain, the early steel-hulled ship powered by steam and sail designed by Brunel. Beneath a cover which contains a very shallow pool of water, the underside of the ship is housed in an enclosed space in which the humidity is kept at very low levels to prevent deterioration of the ship's fabric. The stern propeller was an invention of Brunel's.
