The socket of the Signals Mortar has a keyway for a mortar tube. At 5 inches diameter, it seems to be a particularly large type, as smaller 3 inch mortars were known to have been used on airfields elsewhere. Etched around the rim is the legend "MORTAR SIGNAL ML [?] 5 INCH" and at the bottom "1942", plus above that, the Broad Arrow mark denoting government property.
