This is the start of a photographic tour of the surviving WW2 defences on Hayling Island. Designated as an anti-tank island in 1940, the defences were built (as they were elsewhere in the country) mostly in response to the invasion threat posed by Nazi Germany at that time. The first of these can be seen to the right immediately after crossing the bridge that links the island to the mainland. Along the eastern shoreline of Langstone Harbour below the sea defences, are 17 rectangular anti-tank blocks laid corner to corner. The fourth block along from the N end has the initials 'JT' and the date '1940' inscribed into the concrete, but difficult to see, and doesn't photograph well.
