St Giles Board of Works lamp-post, Torrington Square: detail
St Giles Board of Works operated from 1855, when the parishes of St Giles in the Fields and St George Bloomsbury (already combined as civil parishes since the late 18th century) were constituted a District under the Metropolis Management Act. In 1900 the creation of tier of authorities to sit below the relatively-new London County Council meant that these District authorities were absorbed into the new Metropolitan Boroughs: in this case, the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn. The lamp-posts, of which there is a row along the east side of Torrington Square, can be seen in context at TQ2982 : St Giles Board of Works lamp-posts, Torrington Square.
