Staines Barn conversions
Staines Barn conversions
Staines Barn and several adjacent former farm buildings are currently in the process of being converted into dwellings. The barn complex is situated by a sharp bend in Church Road, just east of St Andrew's church > Link. The public bridleway leading past it - Home Piece Road - links it with The Street in Claxton. The track marks the route of the 1928 extension of a narrow gauge railway > Link - Link which between 1926 and 1936 ran the 1.6 kilometres from Claxton Manor Farm > Link to the south bank of the River Yare > Link - in 1928 it was extended south to Staines Barn, just east of the church. The railway - it was known locally as Pyke's Railway - transported sugar beet which were loaded onto wherries and transported to the Cantley sugar factory > Link which is situated several kilometres to the north-east.
