Liverpool (Speke) Airport (also known as Speke Aerodrome) was the original Airport of Liverpool. It officially opened in 1933 although scheduled flights to Manchester and London had begun as early as 1930 (LinkExternal link Liverpool Echo).

In 1966, a new 7,500 ft runway was opened by Prince Philip on a new site to the southeast of the existing airfield. It enabled the airport to be open for business around the clock and is in use to this day. During the 1980s, the buildings and facilities at the North Airfield were scrapped and the airport as we know it today (through the gate in this photo) was developed. It was renamed John Lennon Airport in 2002.
