Wingmen! - return of the sand martins
Wingmen! - return of the sand martins
The sand martin has a rapid flight with wings that are beaten backwards and towards its body during acceleration. The sight of the birds flying low over the river and the sound of their buzzing calls is often one of the first signs of the spring as the arrive here from the Sahara as early as March. The wings are relatively long, with wing chords ranging from 94 mm to 106 mm. This long slender wing is well adapted for swift, maneuverable flight over long distances and flight speeds have been estimated up to 31 mph. There is another photo of two flying here NZ1365 : Sand martins over River Tyne
