Other names for this plant are Cuckoo pint, Jack-in-the-pulpit, Soldier-in-a-sentry-box and Bloody man's finger. An old Kentish name is 'Kitty-come-down-the-lane-jump-up-and-kiss-me'

The flower releases a urine-like odour designed to attract flies for pollination and club shaped spike releases a urine-like odour. Its fruit - a spike of bright orange berries > Link - Link - is a common sight in hedgerows and woods in autumn. The berries are toxic to humans.
