SZ5778 : Ventnor from the east

taken 19 years ago, near to Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, England

Ventnor from the east.
Ventnor from the east.
This view over the eastern suburbs of Ventnor was taken from the viewpoint at SZ576783. The church is Holy Trinity Church, at SZ569778, built in 1860-2 by C. E. Giles of Taunton. The upper part of the NW tower is octagonal and much shafted in Early English style. In the part below a stair-turret accompanies the tower, which has plate tracery in the windows. The chancel ends in a five-light window with geometrical tracery. The interior is a period piece with much foliage carving and a complete scheme of stained glass by Clayton & Bell. There is a screen of 1912 by C. R. Baker-King.
