Duerley Barns
The stone barns stand at the edge of the poorly drained area of low lying land upstream from Semerwater. The map shows how Raydale Beck and Longdale Syke have straight artificial channels in this square in an attempt at some time in the past to reclaim land for agriculture, a task which now seems rather pointless as the land is very marginal. The view extends towards the forestry plantations around the head of the dale, an enterprise which probably shows better returns than sheep farming.
