Sand martins over River Tyne
Sand martins over River Tyne
Set fast shutter speed and continuous shooting and hoped for the best. This was my best shot from over 100 exposures, most with no birds at all! Not perfect by any means as particularly hard to focus on a small dot moving at 30mph in nothing resembling a straight line. The Latin name for the sand martin is Riparia riparia, meaning 'of the riverbank'. The ripples on the river give a nice background. Four birds playing follow my leader over the water, chattering like machine guns in a dog-fight, are amazing to watch and if I ever get a detailed photo you'll be the first to know. Here's six less zoomed NZ1365 : Wingmen! - return of the sand martins
