The old Hearse House, Towne Gate, Heddon on the Wall
The old Hearse House, Towne Gate, Heddon on the Wall
Now incorporated in the garden of Church House (left), the oldest house in the village, is the small, detached building of the former Hearse House, now upgraded for private use. In its former use it would have had a doorway opening directly onto the churchyard at the rear NZ1366 : Rear of Hearse House from St Andrew's Churchyard. It was used to house the horse-drawn hearse for use when required by the parishioners, a horse being supplied by the coal company or a local farmer. Fashion, rather than any fall in the death-rate, was the reason for its disuse. The Jubilee Tree, a golden-leaved sycamore, is on the right NZ1366 : Jubilee Tree, Heddon on the Wall.
