Common Star of Bethlehem, Butterfly Garden, Heddon Common
Common Star-of-Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) is a common garden plant and like its close relatives, onion and garlic, grows from a bulb. The few plants here were probably planted along with a few other spring bulbs. They are said to be edible and nutritious and were eaten both raw and cooked in ancient times. They are still eaten in the East, roasted like chestnuts, but other reports say they carry toxic compounds and can be strong medicine if not carefully prepared. The name of the plant may have come from their use as emergency rations during pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
