Sun Spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia)
Sun Spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia)
Sun spurge can be found growing on cultivated land, in gardens, allotments, arable fields and on waste ground. The plant flowers from May to August and is fairly common through Britain, but scarcer and more coastal in the north.

Euphorbiaceae are one of the largest flowering-plant genera, with 2,420 species, many of which can be seen in gardens as ornamental plants; some are sources of drugs, others are considered to be weeds. The genus' common name is derived from a group of annual herbs used as purgatives, or spurges. The milky sap of many species contains latex which are exploited commercially, such as the rubber tree. Other important Euphorbiaceae include the Castor Oil Plant and the Cassava. In the old days, the latex in the stems and leaves of sun spurge was used on warts, as when set it was supposed to stifle the wart by not allowing it to breathe.
