Clematis is a genus comprising 300-odd species within the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, and their garden hybrids, mainly of Chinese and Japanese origins, have been popular since the mid-1800s. Clematis vitalba is the only species native to Great Britain which is also known as traveller's joy, so named by the herbalist John Gerard.
