Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, B Engine
Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, B Engine
The main pumping plant at Claymills consists of four Woolf compound, rotative, beam pumping engines built in 1885 by Gimson and Company of Leicester. They are labelled A, B, C and D and are these are arranged in mirror image pairs, in two separate engine houses.

A and B beam engines were stopped by the Corporation in 1969, two years before full closure of the steam pumping station and the AB engine house was left to deteriorate over many years, falling into a poor state with weather getting in through the roof and windows. This photograph shows B engine which has been mostly restored in contrast to the unrestored A engine (SK2625 : Claymills Victorian Pumping Station, A Engine (Unrestored)) which stands opposite, showing the condition to which the engines had deteriorated when the site was handed over to the Claymills Pumping Engines Trust in September 1993. It also provides a reminder of how much work has been done to the B engine to return it to its current state.
Claymills Victorian Pumping Station
Claymills Pumping Station is a former steam-powered, sewage pumping station on the north side of Burton upon Trent, now restored as a museum and visitor attraction. It was built between 1884 and 1886 and used to pump sewage caused by the brewing industry in Burton-upon-Trent to the sewage farm at Egginton. It is designated as a Grade II* listed building (Historic England List entry Number: 1038427 LinkExternal link ); one of only three pumping stations of this size and completeness to survive in England.
