The Callander & Oban Railway line opened in stages from 1866 to 1880. The stretch through Glen Ogle was completed first and it was one of the more demanding to construct. It consists of a 1 in 60 gradient to the 941 feet (287m) summit at Glenoglehead. Referred to by the Director of the company as "the Khyber Pass of Scotland", it required a substantial viaduct running parallel to the glen and many sections to be cut through the bedrock.

Scheduled to be closed under the Beeching cuts on 1st November 1965, closure was forced a few weeks earlier due to a rockfall near the top of Glen Ogle on 27 September 1965.

The Glen Ogle section of the line is now part of National Cycle Network Route 7 LinkExternal link and is also part of the Rob Roy Way long distance route LinkExternal link .
