Photographed in its fine autumn colour, this wild service or chequer tree (Sorbus torminalis) has died following further wind damage. At the time it was thought to be the largest example of its species in the British Isles. See also Link

Many wild service trees colour well in autumn in shades varying from brown, through yellow to crimson. These colour variations seem to be retained throughout the life of the trees
