St James of Compostella, Main Street, Lissett
Grade II Listed church originating from around 1120 with extensive rebuilding both in the early 14th century and 1741 after storm damage. Further restoration by Hugh Roumieu Gough for John Dent, lord of the manor and George Trevor, rector was carried out in 1876. The work included the rebuilding of the chancel arch, the addition of the bellcot, refenstration, and the paving of the chancel with flowered quarry tiles inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. The bell turret houses two bells, one the earliest dated bell in Great Britain of 1254, inscribed "MCCLIIII"; they were restored in 1974. (The undated bell of St Botolph's, Hardham, in Sussex, said to be even older). In 1831 the chapelry is described as having a population of 95 and the chapel being valued in the parliamentary return at £100.
