A web search reveals the long history of textile mills on this site from a book 'Yorkshire Cotton' as quoted by Kathy Witheridge of Ontario:

"Griffe Mill, Stanbury - The firm of Hollings & Ross were spinning cotton at this mill in 1793. In 1811 Crompton noted that the mill held ten water frames with fifty-two spindles each so it was not a large building. From 1811 or before, until at least 1835 part of this mill was tenanted by Thomas Lister for cotton spinning while the other part was retained by James Ross until 1820. In that year Ross wished to sell his share. The mill then measured twelve yards by nine yards and Ross had five throstles with ninety-six spindles each. Griff Mill was then taken for worsted spinning."
