Brick-built cottages, Swaffham Prior
Just north of the Red Lion, in Swaffham Prior High Street.
In this village - and others nearby - most of the older buildings are not brick-built (clunch is perhaps more typical). But the pale-coloured brick seen here strikes me as typical of Cambridgeshire - in places such as March and Chatteris, or along the A1 in the old county of Huntingdonshire. According to Alec Clifton-Taylor (writing in the Cambridgeshire volume of 'The Buildings of England') these 'washed-out yellow-grey bricks' are made from the Gault clay to be found along the left bank of the Cam.
