Princess Elizabeth monument
Memorial monument in Burford church to Princess Elizabeth of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt and sister of Henry Bolingbroke, who later became Henry IV. She is thought to have been born at Kenilworth Castle in 1364. At sixteen she married John Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, a grandson of King Edward III, but the marriage was unconsummated, he was 8 at the time. Bored with her young husband, she became pregnant to John Holland, Duke of Exeter, a half-brother of King Richard II. Her father quickly gained an annulment of her first marriage and she married her second husband, John Holland. Holland was executed for treason in 1400 for conspiring during the Epiphany Rising against his cousin, Elizabeth's brother Henry IV of England. She married her third husband Sir John Cornwall in 1400. Princess Elizabeth died in 1425, aged sixty one.
