taken 7 years ago, 4 km NE of Kilmalieu, Highland, Scotland

Pine stumps 1
Pine stumps 1
The erosion of the blanket bog at the margin of Lochan Doire a' Bhràgaid has exposed the stumps of ancient pine trees, probable remnants of the Caledonian Forest. The deterioration of the climate and growth of blanket bog from around 4500 years ago is recorded in this way throughout highland Scotland and Ireland (see L6352 : Eroding peat with stumps).
