The museum has been housed for many years in Apsley House, originally a private residence built during a period of prosperity circa 1830, a decade or more before development began at the railway village a mile to the north. A slightly menacing suit of armour stood on the staircase and a rather more scary stuffed crocodile in an upstairs room are childhood memories. Stories of the crocodile lurking in nearby Coate Water proved to be false.
