Heighington railway station

Possibly the oldest railway station in the world, Heighington (then named Aycliffe Lane) was opened by the Stockton and Darlington Railway on 27 September 1825.

The station has been renamed several times. Over the years it has been known as "Aycliffe and Heighington" and "Aycliffe". The present name was applied on 1st September 1874.

Another historical claim to fame for Heighington is that the first engine on the line, Locomotion No. 1, was assembled and put on the rails here in 1825.

Train assembly recommenced at Heighington in 2015 when Hitachi opened a new factory near the station Link . The new class 800/801 IEP trains will be built or fitted out there for use on the East Coast Main Line and Great Western Main Line. Scotrail Class 385 commuter trains for use in the Central Belt are also being assembled there at the time of writing (June 2017).

Class 142 DMU

The Class 142 (Pacer) is a class of Pacer diesel multiple unit (D.M.U.) used by various rail franchises. 96 units were built by BREL in Derby between 1985 and 1987. They were a development of the earlier Class 141 which were introduced in 1984.
