SK1594 : Gritstone sheep, Linch Clough

taken 21 years ago, near to Ridge Nether Moor [other Features], Derbyshire, Great Britain

Gritstone sheep, Linch Clough
Gritstone sheep, Linch Clough
The sheep, the predominant local breed, also successfully used elsewhere on thin acid grazing, are grazing along a strip of grassland where the plateau meets the clough. Here the water can run off so there is no peat buildup and better grazing, even though the soil is thin. Walk "inland" a few metres and the blanket bog resumes. The rims of cloughs are good route choices for walkers, even with the problems caused by pesky tributaries.
View down Linch Clough into the neighbouring square and across the Derwent to Howden Moors.
