Keills Chapel of St. Charmaig

The building dates from the late 12th or early 13th century although it is likely the site had been a scared one from perhaps the 8th century. It has a simple rectangular plan with no structual distinction between the nave and the chancel. It is thus typical of the church and chapels in the Western Highlands. When in use the walls would probably have had lime rendering both internally and externally with further possible painted decoration.

The chapel would have been abandoned for services sometime after the Reformation after between the site was used simply for burials. The building was placed under the Guardianship of the Secretary of State for Scotland in 1972 so that it could be used to display the many carved stones and crosses the earliest of which date from the 8th century.
