Trinity House Obelisk at Portland Bill
Trinity House Obelisk at Portland Bill
This three-sided tapering obelisk stands seven metres tall. It was erected by Trinity House in 1844 at the southern tip of Portland Bill as a warning marker of the low shelf of rock below which extends for thirty metres south into the sea. The side facing inland carries a panel inscribed "TH 1844".

The obelisk is Grade II listed (List Entry Number: 1203105 LinkExternal link Heritage Gateway). Despite this, it was threatened with demolition in 2002 and was saved by public subscription.

Andy Potter’s photo SY6768 : Trinity House warning marker gives a good impression of the size of the monument.
