House plaques in Rye
There is nowhere else quite like Rye. In the words of Pevsner: "Hill towns are rare in England. In Sussex Lewes is one, Winchelsea another, but Rye, its sandstone rock rising out of the total flat of the fen, makes its statement yet more unmistakably. The houses building up to the low tower of the church are reminiscent of the north of France."
One of the features of Rye for which it has long been famous is its potteries, especially the plaques which are found on many of the houses in Rye as well as in neighbouring places such as Winchelsea. Sadly many of the original potteries making these plaques seem to have closed. These examples are on the north side of Mermaid Street.
