RAF Henlow
RAF Henlow started life as a military aircraft repair depot in 1917 and was opened in 1918. At the time this photograph was taken it was home to an active military grass airfield where flying had taken place continually since 1918. The airfield originally supported a RAF Depot constructing different aircraft types ranging from the bi-plane era to WWII aircraft, including the Hurricane. Also, over its time it had been the centre for Parachute testing, an aircraft repair centre during the Second World War, an RAF Technical College and Radio Engineering Unit to name among others.
It was announced in 2016 that the site is one of 13 to be released by the MOD and will provide enough land for up to 780 potential new homes to be built. It will finally close in 2020.
Currently, there are two flying clubs at Henlow; a civilian flying club, ‘Henlow Flying Club’ (HFC) and a Service Club; ‘RAF Henlow Aero Club’ (RAFHAC). This view is from a small viewing bank next to the Henlow Flying Club.
