The ridge in the centre of the photograph marks the line of the former Great Northern Railway and London & North Western Railway Joint Line (GN&LNWRJt line) which linked Market Harborough to Bottesford and Saxondale via Melton Mowbray. It was opened in 1879 and saw increased use in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the discovery of the iron ore bearing geology to the north of Melton Mowbray. The closure of the ironstone mining mid 2oth century and the "modernisation" of the railways led to the line's demise in 1964.

This was the site of the Stathern Ironstone sidings and was where the narrow gauge railway incline brought the ironstone down the steep Harby Hills from the Eastwell and Eaton workings. See LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
Also see John Sutton's photos here: LinkExternal link. John knows far more about the local ironstone railways than I do and has a good photographic record of the old sites and buildings on

The hills in the distance form the north western edge of the Vale of Belvoir, (pronounced 'beaver').
