Harding's Wood Junction, Trent and Mersey Canal, Staffordshire
The narrow boat "Jemavsea" is making the 90 degree turn into the narrow entrance to the Macclesfield Canal. The Trent and Mersey Canal was completed in 1777. The rusty colour of the water is caused by leaching from the ironstone strata in the Harecastle Tunnel half a mile away. Thomas Telford was asked to survey the route of the Macclesfield Canal in 1825, but it was eventually built, supervised by William Crossley, and opened in 1831.
